The 2012 Kids 'n' Us: Families Facing Diabetes Conference was held on Saturday, October 20th in Edmonton.
MLA David Dorward lead the conference off with information on the announced (and long-awaited) coverage of insulin pumps as promised in the 2012 election campaign. Following questions to MLA Dorward, guest speaker Cally Wesson presented research highlights in support of those with type 1 diabetes (T1D).
Afternoon sessions included information on current and upcoming treatment technologies including the continuous glucose monitors and the long-awaited assistance for sleep-deprived parents, the MySentry from Medtronic. We heard of available community programs including the Disability Tax Credit and Savings Program, the Student Health Initiative Partnerships, and Diabetic Alert Dogs. We were excited to learn of the expansion of the Canadian Diabetes Association camps for children with diabetes and their families, and of camps for older children through young adults run by iChallengeDiabetes and Connected in Motion, respectively operated by Chris Jarvis and Chloe Steepe. Edmonton Catholic School District described their excellent approach to meet the students with special medical needs and Edmonton Public School Board provided details on their progress towards implementing improved standards of care for students with Diabetes.
In addition, there was a full day of teen programming promoting awareness, education and peer socialization. The games and crafts in the childcare rooms were enhanced by visits from guest speakers and entertainers.
